Mounting the camera

When we first approached the design, we knew we wanted to bring the popular, boxy shape of a cinema camera to the Eos-M, and also maintain the accessibility of the original camera. The first “Eureka” moment we had when trying to devise a way of fastening the box to the camera, was that, we could mount the bracket into the large hole from where we removed the LCD. Since we are moving the LCD to reposition it, naturally, the mechanism which held the LCD in place could hold the mount in exactly the same way, resulting in a very strong and secure solution.

Small form factor

Measuring only 4″ x 3.2″ x 2.3″, we managed to achieve not only the look we wanted, but also in a form factor that gives this box a unique look and allows the full assemble to fit comfortably and securely in one hand. Because the re-positioned LCD screen footprint was so small, simply moving it to the top of our case via a straight extruded body, left no room on either side of the screen, to secure it. To resolve this, we added a slight reverse bevel to the body which widened it enough to allow for fitting the monitor, without widening the entire body; which would have blocked the camera control panel.

Integrated battery

The battery solution took on many iterations, from screwing a mount onto the back, to sealing an internal rechargeable lithium. After weeks of searching for solutions, we entertained various battery packs, until we settle on this current pack. By allowing an opening for the insertion of the pack into the housing, it provided easy access points to the charging port, dual USB ports for powering the camera, or an additional external monitor. Once installed, it gave the unit a very professional and seamless look, as if it was part of the body.

Tight tolerances

The housing was designed to be as easy to assemble without room for error, as much as possible. When you insert the mount, it stops at just the right place to align the screw holes, but if you insert it upside down, the holes will not align. The same for the battery mount. The LCD mounting sides are interchangeable.

Parts were sourced from the most obtainable to the most difficult to obtain, requiring patients, trial and error of expensive proportions.

Materials used

As previously mention, we were not content with producing a product not meant to last. Through trial and error, we tried at least a handful of different 3D print filaments, before settling with one sporting engineering specs and we use screw fasteners designed to go in straight and hold in place. Each screw hole was reinforced with a high to solid fill density to ensure the highest degree of holding screw lugs in place, and that would not skew or loosen over time. Filament used is designed not to shrink during printing, or due to environmental stresses such as UV, heat or cold.

Quality control checklist

As good as 3D printing technology is, it isn’t perfect. Getting an item to print perfectly or as close to perfect as possible takes time. We took the time. What started as a few months project has become almost a year project, and that’s because we made it as close to perfect as possible. If it had very noticeable surface imperfections, to the eye, it was rejected. If a hole was too large or too tight without reason, it was rejected. If the filament produced inferior results, it was rejected. When it came down to final production, we still found ourselves picking out the not so presentable prints and discarding them. Although this product could be considered a hand made product (not factory produced), it of course will exhibit some of the typical artifacts associated with 3D printing at a consumer level, in order to keep costs low.

Although this is not a mass produced product, we are so confident in the attention our manufacturing, and that we are sure that you too will enjoy your product for the long term, that we are providing a 1 year parts replacement warranty. This covers all shipped components including: Main Body, Battery Holder, LCD mount, Camera Mount, Battery Screws, Ribbon Cable, Allen Key, Mount Screws, Interface Connector, and covers issues attributed to poor workmanship in the manufacturing process.

Although this product was designed for easy assembly, this warranty does not cover damages due to excessive trauma such as over tightening screws, cracks or scrapes due to dropping or other stresses, or applying excess pressure when handling during assembly. We encourage that all rigging attachments are made directly to the camera ¼-20 mount only and not to the ¼-20 screw hole of the battery/strap mount.

This warranty does not cover damages to your camera, resulting from the installation of this product. It is advised that an experience technician install the electrical connectors to your camera if you lack the experience, skills or confidence to do it yourself.

Beginning as a personal project, we thought it selfish not to offer this box to those whom also found it cumbersome and inconvenient to handle a small point and shoot to shoot a professional video. By combining a larger, low profile battery that doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb, and by relocating the monitor horizontally, we know that you will appreciate this improvement to the production process as much as we do.

The case is made of a high quality Eco-Friendly, PLA material, with a semi-gloss finish; with a particular emphasis on low shrinkage and high strength.

The camera and battery mounts are made of a high strength, zero warping, PLA material and printed with a higher than average wall thickness to ensure that it be next to impossible to break away from camera or for screw lugs to come loose.

These PLA solutions were chosen as the best to meet the requirements for this product application, only after trying countless types of PLA products at significant development cost to ensure the final product you receive will meet all expectations and last indefinitely, however we are sure you will come back to take advantage of future developments and innovations with this product line.

Before shipping, each component goes through a vigorous quality control inspection process to meet the following criteria:

Unacceptable surface finish anomalies such as deep scratches, deep gouges etc.
Poor fit due to out of tolerance
Malformed screw holes
Due to restrictions of shipping lithium batteries from Canada, we are unable to include the battery with this product due to liability concerns

A Canon dummy battery or equivalent is required to power the camera using the battery pack, however the camera can still be powered using the camera’s battery source

The demonstration camera used for all our promo’s does not display any significant cabling, and that is because it is power from within the housing from the internals of the camera. It can be powered with or without the camera battery. This option is tremendously difficult for the novice, and we need to source an ideal solution before providing this information.
